How Do I Print Picture Metafiles in Crystal Reports Correctly?

Over the last couple of weeks I have had a number of clients asking the same question "How Do I Print Picture Metafiles (*.wmf and *.emf) extension files correctly"? in various versions of Crystal Reports

It is documented that designers can add picture metafiles to Crystal Report files.

These file formats are sometimes preferred to JPEG and TIFF picture file formats, as they have transparent backgrounds, especially when the report is printed

Usually when adding pictures to Crystal Reports files, one simply uses the Insert menu - Picture option, however when dealing with metafile picture files, the image does not render correctly, when the report is printed.

Solution:

To insert picture metafile formats files into Crystal Reports, so it prints correctly:

  1. From the Insert menu, select the OLE Object
  2. In the Insert Object dialog box, select the Create New Option
  3. Select the Microsoft Office Word Document from the Object Type List
  4. Press the OK button  (This attaches the object to the mouse pointer)
  5. Click in the required report section
  6. Copy and Paste the required Picture Metafile into the Word Document placeholder
  7. Resize the image within the Word Document placeholder
  8. Click on the report canvas to exit out of the Word Document Placeholder

After the step 5 in your solution, only rectangle borders are inserted in report (I have CR with MS VS 2008), I can't see any word document, neither it appears after double click. Tried also to paste a picture metafile within the frame (or placeholder) of "Word Document", the picture can be seen but it stays at same position even after word document is deleted. It seems that word document does not hold an image. Also when moving "word object", an image stays at the same position again - i.e. it does not move with the word object. Finally the print preview of report does not keep the aspect ratio of wmf image. How to force "word object" to grab the wmf image?

Hi Sinclair, This is for standalone Crystal Reports Versions, and not those that are embedded within Microsoft Visual studio, as this is a completely different version and program. julia
