How Do I Rotate Text in SQL Reporting Services 2008 R2?

Over the last couple of training sessions, a number of delegates have asked the same question, "How do I rotate the text in Tablix and Matrix cells within SQL Server Reporting Services 2008 R2?"

Solution

Within SQL Server Reporting Services, there is cell property that allows report designers to rotate text with Tablix and Matrix cells.

This property can only be accessed from the Properties Tab of SQL Server Reporting Services and not from the Property dialog box of these report items.

To change the text rotation properties of the a cell:
  1. Select the required cell
  2. If the Properties Tab is not available, pres F4 on the keyboard, to display it
  3. Within the Localizationcategory, within the Properties Tab, find the WritingMode property
  4. Select either the Vertical or the Rotate270 option from the drop down

This is inaccurate - the WritingMode property is only available in SQL 2008 R2, not SQL 2008.
